Confused by all the Washington-speak? Here's what those acronyms mean:

HHS
U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services

ACYF
Administration on Children, Youth and Families (an office of HHS)

FYSB
Family Youth Services Bureau (an office of ACYF; administers RHYA grants)

DOJ
U.S. Dept. of Justice

OJJDP
Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (an office of DOJ; administers JJDPA programs)

JJDPA
Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Act

RHYA
Runaway and Homeless Youth Act (Title III of JJDPA)

BC
Basic Centers' runaway and homeless youth program (part of RHYA)

TLP
Transitional living grant program for homeless youth (part of RHYA)

Street-based
Grants to street-based services to reduce sexual abuse of runaway, homeless and street youth (part of Violence Against Women Act)

DSO
Deinstitutionalization of status offenders (DSO is a core requirement of the JJDPA, but recent changes in the regulations weaken protections for juvenile offenders)

Status offender
A minor who has committed an act that would not be a crime if committed by an adult

Reauthorization
The process by which an existing law is updated and reapproved, usually for a specific period of time. An authorization often limits the amount that can be spent annually on a program.

Labor/HHS
Refers to either Senate or House appropriations subcommittee overseeing spending for RHYA, among many other programs

Commerce/ Justice/State
Refers to either Senate or House appropriations subcommitteethat sets RHY funding

Education and the Work Force
The House committee that oversees, through its Subcommittee on Early Childhood,Youth and Families, reauthorization of JJDPA/RHYA

Judiciary
The Senate committee that, through its Subcommittee on Youth Violence, oversees reauthorization of JJDPA/RHYA
