Food

One in six Vermont children experience hunger. Lack of affordable housing, low wages, high unemployment, a decrease in the number of local, affordable grocery stores, and lack of public transportation all contribute to hunger and food insecurity in Vermont. Organizations providing free food in Windham County have noticed an increase in need here, too. There are two types of free food organizations. Some offer groceries to take away, and some offer free meals. A few offer both, and even let people cook their own meals on site. There are many reasons why teenagers go to food shelves or kitchens. Some go because their families need the food, and no adult in their home is able or willing to go. Some go because no is cooking meals at home. Some go because they have left home, have no home, or are in Brattleboro on their way to somewhere else. Then there are young people who simply come for the pure joy of a FREE MEAL. For all of these youth, we have gathered information on the places in our county that offer free meals and food to take away. All of them welcome young people.
